Keonjhar Court Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for Fatal Shooting of Sister

KEONJHAR: The District and Sessions Court in Keonjhar has sentenced 35-year-old Prasanna Barik to life imprisonment following his conviction for the murder of his sister over an escalating financial dispute, with the court finding him guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and imposing a monetary fine while ruling that the prosecution had successfully established guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The tragic incident occurred at Somagiri village under the Pandapada police station limits, where Barik, who worked as a security guard, resided with his family and his unmarried sister, 32-year-old Malati Barik, and according to case records, Barik had fallen ill and required money for medical treatment, but when he requested funds from his sister, an argument erupted after she refused his request and advised him to ask his wife instead, enraged by which Barik retrieved his licensed firearm and shot his sister at close range. Malati sustained a fatal gunshot wound below her shoulder, and though neighbors rushed to the scene upon hearing the gunshot and attempted to transport her to the District Headquarters Hospital in Keonjhar, she succumbed to her injuries en route.

Pandapada police dispatched teams to the scene following the shooting, seizing the firearm used in the crime and taking Barik into custody at the site, and during the trial, the prosecution presented key physical evidence, forensic reports, medical records, and witness testimonies that conclusively established the timeline of events and Barik's culpability, leading the Keonjhar Sessions Court to hand down the life sentence as the convict has been remanded to jail to serve his term.
